Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Films, as a form of mass communication, have proven to be a powerful tool for disseminating information, influencing public attitudes, and shaping behavior, particularly in rural areas. Health awareness is one such domain where films can play a transformative role, as they have the potential to communicate complex health issues in an engaging and accessible manner. In rural communities, where access to formal health education and resources may be limited, films can bridge the gap by delivering essential health messages to the target population. In Zing Local Government Area, Taraba State, rural women often face challenges related to health, ranging from maternal health to general well-being, exacerbated by limited access to healthcare services and education. Films, particularly those that are locally produced and culturally relevant, can serve as an effective medium for educating rural women about important health issues, such as family planning, hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention. By presenting health information in a visual and narrative form, films can enhance understanding and motivate behavioral changes. This study aims to explore how films are used in Zing to promote health awareness among rural women, examining the effectiveness, content, and impact of these films in shaping health-related attitudes and behaviors.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant role of films in promoting health awareness, there is limited research on the effectiveness of films in reaching rural women and influencing their health behaviors, especially in regions like Zing Local Government Area, Taraba State. In this community, rural women may lack access to formal health education channels and are often not adequately informed about critical health issues. The problem lies in determining the extent to which films are utilized to address health concerns and how these films resonate with the target audience. Additionally, it is crucial to understand the barriers and challenges that may hinder the successful use of films as health promotion tools, including issues such as language barriers, cultural relevance, and limited access to digital media. This study seeks to examine the role of films in promoting health awareness, evaluating their effectiveness in educating rural women in Zing about health practices and encouraging positive health behaviors.
